MANIYA BARREDO HONORED WITH 2019 "PIONEER OF ATLANTA DANCE" AWARD

Modern Atlanta Dance Festival - May 10 & 11 at the Balzer Theater at Herren’s.

As if we needed another reason to get out to the Modern Atlanta Dance Festival, our very own founder and director, Maniya Barredo, is this year's recipient of the Full Radius Dance Company's prestigious "Pioneer of Atlanta Dance Award!

Douglas Scott, the creator of Full Radius Dance and the Modern Atlanta Dance Festival (MAD), fears the loss of historical first-person voices in Atlanta dance, and for many years he’s not only sought to identify the pioneers of the scene but to honor them during the annual festival.

For Scott, it’s about paying homage to the entire spectrum of modern and contemporary dance in the city and acknowledging those who built the lasting foundations that so many dance leaders and organizations continue to stand upon. Past recipients include figureheads and forerunners Ruth Mitchell, Mozel Spriggs, Virginia and Bobby Barnett, and Lee Harper.

The award recognizes Maniya's contributions to the advancement and progress of dance in her own ballet career, but also acknowledges her work in passing the torch to others through the school.  This legacy will be demonstrated in the school's performance of Roscoe Sales's piece, "Now and Then".

If you'd like to join in the Saturday, May 11 ceremony and celebration, tickets may be purchased at the MAD Festival web site.
